Microwave Oven

A microwave oven is a microwave oven. Right? It is true that when you get down to the basics, all microwaves do the same job. Most of us use our microwaves for one purpose, which is to heat up leftovers, put some heat into a hot drink or to popcorn. Microwaves are versatile enough that they can be helpful with more important tasks such as cooking a main dish, get a jump-start on a soup or defrosting frozen foods in advance of meal preparation.

Even though the value of microwaves is common and well known, there is a lot of variety in styles, designs and functions that you can find when you go on the market to buy a new microwave oven. Size is a big consideration when you purchase a new unit because where you will keep your microwave is a big issue in the limited space of most kitchens. To determine how large you need your microwave to be, you should have a firm grasp on what you will be using the appliance for on a daily basis.

The great thing about having so many choices in the microwave oven market is if you just need a small microwave for your office or to send with a college student for a small dorm room or apartment, models to fit that need are available. However, microwaves also come in big enough models that you could literally cook all of your meals including full sized casseroles in the microwave if the cabinet of the unit is big enough.

This is a decision where functionality meets space constraints. But if you think you might need the larger microwave functionality but you cannot afford to give up that much counter space, you can always look to installing your new microwave over the stove or in some other counter space that might be underutilized. There will be a cost to that kind of installation because you need the proper carpentry and electric outlets in place to put your microwave right into the cabinets. But the outcome looks great and moves the microwave out of the way while still being very handy for daily use.

It’s a good thing to think through your decision about how you will use your microwave when the time comes to buy a new unit for your new home or your remodeled kitchen. If you have never used your microwave oven to cook a full meal, this might the time to think about that option because you may have a hidden resource in your microwave that could make meal preparation so much more efficient and open whole new methods to cooking for your family to you.

By looking at microwave cookbooks or talking to other homemakers who use their microwaves in a variety of ways, you may come to appreciate just how valuable your microwave is. And you can put that appliance to new uses and still always have it there to heat up a cup of coffee or pop a batch of popcorn for family movie night.
